When to go

Every season has its own kind of beach day.

Spring

March–May

Warm beach walks, uncrowded bike paths, and the RBC Heritage golf tournament in April. Coligny Beach Park parking is easy to find before Memorial Day. A good window to book popular rentals before summer rates kick in.

Summer

June–August

Long beach days, Shelter Cove's free Tuesday-night concerts, and the liveliest stretch around Coligny. The free lot at Coligny Beach Park fills by 10 AM on weekends — arrive early or bike in. Book oceanfront and pool homes well in advance.

Fall

September–November

Water stays warm through October, crowds thin after Labor Day, and Hudson's and Skull Creek Boathouse become much easier to get into without a weeks-out reservation. One of the best times to linger over a long dinner near Coligny.

Winter

December–February

A quieter coastal reset with peaceful shoreline walks, mild Lowcountry afternoons, and the best rental rates of the year. Harbour Town, Sea Pines, and most Forest Beach restaurants stay open year-round.

A good start

Plan the basics. Keep the best parts open.

A few decisions before you arrive can make the whole week feel lighter.

01

Understand the distance spread

Both North and South Forest Beach vary internally. A rental at the southern end of North Forest Beach (near SeaCrest or North Shore Place) can be a 10-minute walk to Coligny. One at the northern end is closer to 20–25 minutes on foot. South Forest Beach rentals near Shorewood or Ocean One are typically 5–10 minutes from Coligny Plaza on foot. Check the specific address before assuming either area is uniformly close or far.

02

Match your beach access to your routine

Coligny Beach Park on Pope Avenue has free parking, restrooms, and outdoor showers — the easiest public access point. North Forest Beach has quieter access points along Bradley Beach Road and Dune Lane with limited street parking. If your group plans to drive to the beach daily, Coligny's lot is the most practical. If you're walking or biking from your rental, any of the Forest Beach access paths work well.

03

Plan your bike and dinner logistics early

Hilton Head Bicycle Company (Pope Avenue) and Pedals Bicycles (South Forest Beach Road) are both near Coligny — reserve bikes in advance for summer weeks. For dinner, Hudson's Seafood House and Skull Creek Boathouse fill up fast from June through August; call ahead or plan for an early 5:30 PM seating. Coconut Joe's, Frosty Frog, and Coligny Café are reliable no-reservation fallbacks within walking distance.

Explore the area

North Forest Beach

Quieter and more residential, with beach access via Bradley Beach Road and Dune Lane. Coligny is 10–25 minutes on foot depending on where your rental sits — complexes near the southern boundary are noticeably closer. Best for travelers who want open shoreline and a slower pace.

South Forest Beach

Most villa communities here are 5–12 minutes on foot from Coligny Plaza and Coligny Beach Park. Beach access is easy via the park entrance on Pope Avenue. The tradeoff is more activity nearby — great for groups who want to walk to dinner, less ideal for those who want quiet evenings.

Coligny

The free parking lot at Coligny Beach Park (off South Forest Beach Road) is the island's most practical public beach access. Coconut Joe's, Frosty Frog, Skillets, and the Coligny Kroger are all within a 2-minute walk of the park entrance. The easiest first stop for any Forest Beach trip.

Packing smart

The little things that make a beach day flow.

Simple local pointers for a stay that feels prepared, never overplanned.

Beach access and parking

Coligny Beach Park (off South Forest Beach Road) has the only free public lot near Forest Beach — it fills fast in summer. North Forest Beach access points on Bradley Beach Road and Dune Lane have limited street parking. If you're staying in a rental without a dedicated beach path, biking to Coligny is often faster than driving and finding a spot.

Getting around on two wheels

The paved beach path runs the length of Forest Beach and connects to Coligny and the broader island trail network. Hilton Head Bicycle Company on Pope Avenue and Pedals Bicycles on South Forest Beach Road both rent near Coligny. Most Forest Beach rentals can reach Coligny by bike in 5–15 minutes depending on location. Reserve bikes in advance for summer weeks.

Dinner rhythm

Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks and Skull Creek Boathouse are the top seafood picks but fill fast from June through August — call ahead or aim for a 5:30 PM seating. For no-reservation nights within walking distance: Coconut Joe's Beach Grill and Frosty Frog Café at Coligny Beach Park, Coligny Café on Coligny Circle, or Giuseppi's Pizza on Pope Avenue.
